“Feel the fear and do it anyway.”
Susan Jeffers
I was TERRIFIED to start my online business. It was one of the scariest decisions I’ve ever made. No guaranteed paycheck, no built-in support systems, no savings. Just me, my skills, and my mindset.
For the longest time, fear held me back from taking risks. As a result I stayed small, stuck, stagnant. Safety was the top priority. But one day I realized that if I kept letting fear control me, then nothing in my life would change. I would stay exactly where I was and never actually create the life I dreamed of. So I had to force myself to step out of my comfort zone, and bet on myself.
It wasn’t easy. It still isn’t. But looking back, I wouldn’t trade the freedom and growth I've found for anything.
Starting and running a business as a solopreneur is an empowering journey. It’s a path of self-discovery, creativity, and independence. But for many, it’s also riddled with two significant emotional roadblocks: the fear of failure and the fear of success.
These fears, often misunderstood and underestimated, can silently sabotage progress, stalling dreams and hindering growth. Let’s unpack these fears and explore ways to overcome them.
Fear & Anxiety says: "What if I fail? What if I suck? What if I don’t know enough? What if they laugh? What if they judge?"
Hope & Trust says: "What if I fly? What if it all works out? What if it's easy? What if it flows? What if this is the moment that everything changes for the better?"
Unpack Your Fear
Our fears and self-judgements are often tied to childhood traumas and microtraumas, or our social conditioning. Fear stems from the Ego, the place of external validation.
Your inner child might be telling you, "If I fail, I’m unworthy of love," or "If I succeed, I’ll face envy, isolation, or burnout"
Examine these beliefs to identify which ones no longer serve you. Engage in shadow work or somatic healing to address unresolved traumas.
Release fears by building trust in yourself and the natural flow of life. You can navigate challenges and anything that comes your way. The magic is in the journey, not the destination.
The Fear of Failure
For solopreneurs, failure can feel deeply personal. When you’re the sole person behind your business, every decision, mistake, and outcome can seem like a reflection of your worth. Fear of failure often manifests as procrastination, perfectionism, or an unwillingness to take risks.
Roots of the Fear of Failure
Fear of Judgment, Criticism, Ridicule: Worrying about how others will perceive your missteps.
Self-Worth Tied to Outcomes: Equating success or failure with personal value.
Past Experiences: Childhood memories or previous failures that left emotional scars.
“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.”
Richard Branson
Facing the Fear of Faillure
Redefine Failure: View it as a stepping stone to success rather than a dead end. Every “no” and every misstep offers valuable lessons.
Separate Yourself from Results: Remember that your value as a person is not determined by your business outcomes.
Start Small: Take calculated risks that feel manageable. Small wins build confidence over time.
Focus on Growth & Learning: Shift your perspective from “What if I fail?” to “What did I learn?”. With every new experience you will uncover more about your strengths, skills and boundaries.
Reminder: Failure is the fast track to learning and growth. It is a process of discovery, not a declaration of your value or worth.
The Fear of Success
While it might seem counterintuitive, many solopreneurs fear success as much as, if not more than, failure. Success can bring increased visibility, heightened expectations, and greater pressure and risk. For some, this fear is tied to imposter syndrome or anxiety about maintaining their achievements.
Limiting belief: When the stakes are higher, so are the losses. Fear of success is often fear of change. And change is exactly what success requires.
Roots of the Fear of Success
Fear of Being Seen: Worrying about standing out or being criticized.
Increased Responsibility: Concerns about managing growth or maintaining high standards. Maybe it is the fear of not wanting to deal with any “disruptions” in your life,a longing for peace and simplicty.
Disruption of Comfort Zones: Success often brings change, which can feel unsettling.
Reminder: True peace, True stability, True alignment is found within. It's not dependent on external circumstances.
Facing the Fear of Success
Define Success on Your Terms: Clarify what success looks like for you. Make sure it aligns with your values and lifestyle goals.
Embrace Visibility: Shift your mindset from “I’ll be judged” to “I’ll inspire and help others.”
Build Systems: Prepare for growth by creating workflows, outsourcing tasks, or building a support network.
Practice Self-Compassion: Remind yourself that you don’t have to be perfect or have all the answers.
Comfort Zone: "This feels safe—but I know I'm meant for more."
Fear Zone: "What if I fail? What will people think?"
Learning Zone: "I don’t have it all figured out, but I’m figuring it out."
Growth Zone: "This is where I’ve meant to be all along."
From Comfort to Growth
There are four zones that describe the emotional and psychological journey most solopreneurs experience when stepping into entrepreneurship. The journey through them is not linear, but a cycle. Every soulpreneur moves through these zones, often revisiting them more than once, every time you launch a new offer, raise your rates, or pivot directions.
1. Comfort Zone
In the Comfort Zone, you’re doing what you know. You might be working a stable job, freelancing part-time, or dreaming about starting your own business—but not actually taking action yet.
You're not challenged, but you're not fulfilled either.
You crave freedom, alignment, and creative control—but the unknown feels risky.
You keep telling yourself: "Maybe someday."
Why it’s hard for solopreneurs to leave this zone? It means letting go of predictable income and the reliable systems and structures that you've grown accustomed to.
Comfort zones are cozy because they feel familiar, safe, stable, predictable. But staying in them too long is like pressing pause on your life. Want to feel alive again? Do things that make you feel uncomfortable, uneasy, unsure, wobbly, vulnerable, awkward, exposed, stretched. It's a muscle you have to use or you lose it.
2. Fear Zone
As soon as you step outside your comfort zone (e.g., filing your LLC, announcing your services, creating your first offer), the Fear Zone kicks in.
Imposter syndrome shows up.
Comparison and self-doubt get loud.
You might fear judgment, rejection, or simply not knowing what to do next.
This zone feels like danger, but it’s actually a gateway to your next level.
Next time you feel nervous about stepping outside of your comfort zone, remind yourself that you feel fear and anxiety because it's NEW, not because you're incapable or incompetent.
3. Learning Zone
Once you push past fear, you enter the zone where most solopreneurs start to find their footing. You still have hard days, but you’ve built resilience. You’re no longer just surviving—you’re building something sustainable, impactful, and truly yours.
You're building new skills—like marketing, sales, copywriting, or managing your time.
You make mistakes (and learn from them).
You realize no one really has it all figured out—and that’s okay.
Stay curious, take messy action, and invest in support or mentorship if possible.
The success you seek is waiting outside of your comfort zone and on the other side of fear.
4. Growth Zone
This is where your confidence starts to match your calling. You still have hard days, but you’ve built resilience. You’re no longer just surviving—you’re building something sustainable, impactful, and truly yours.
You’re in alignment with your purpose and values.
You’re leading yourself—and maybe others.
You’re seeing real results: clients, income, transformation.
What it feels like: Empowered. Rooted. Expansive. This is where the magic happens.
Growth doesn’t happen by staying where it’s comfortable. It happens by choosing curiosity and courage, over and over again.
Reframe Your Anxious Questions
Anxious thoughts about the future can be loud and convincing. They demand your attention and present threats as real, dangerous and harmful in order to keep you safe.
But remember that worried thoughts don't have the full story, so you don't have to believe them! What if you take away their power and flip the "worst case scenario" thoughts into "best case scenarios"?
What if I succeed?
What if it goes well?
What if I enjoy it?
What if I can handle it?
What if I am capable?
Feel that shift in perspective in your body - lighter, hopeful, expansive and full of possibilities. Loosen the grip of anxiety through curiosity, confidience and courage.
This kind of cognitive reframe isn’t toxic positivity — it’s emotional flexibility, it's neuroplasticity. Energy flows where our mind goes, so focus on the positive!
Take your power back by turning, 'what if it goes wrong?' into 'what if it all goes right?"
The Interplay Between Fear of Failure & Success
Often, these fears are two sides of the same coin. For example, fear of failure might stem from a desire to avoid rejection, while fear of success might arise from a fear of increased exposure to said rejection. Both fears can trap solopreneurs in a cycle of self-doubt, insecurity and inaction.
Breaking the Cycle
Identify Limiting Beliefs: Identify and challenge limiting beliefs. Reflect on the inner dialogue fueling your fears. “If I fail, I’m not good enough”“If I succeed, I’ll lose my freedom,”"I’m not deserving of success," or "I must earn success through hard work".
Challenge These Beliefs: Question their validity. Are they rooted in fact, or are they assumptions from past experiences or societal expectations?
Take Action Despite Fear: Courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s acting despite it. Start small, and let momentum build.
Life becomes more joyful when we detach from rigid definitions and standards. Redefine success and failure based on your own unique values and authenticity, not societal expectations and past conditioning.
Moving Forward with Confidence
Overcoming the fears of success and failure is not about eliminating them entirely—it’s about recognizing and reframing them. Solopreneurs who lean into these fears often find they hold the keys to growth and self-mastery.
Practical Steps to Build Resilience:
Celebrate Progress: Acknowledge small wins and milestones.
Find Community: Connect with fellow solopreneurs for support and encouragement.
Seek Professional Guidance: Coaches, therapists, or mentors can help you navigate complex emotions and limiting beliefs.
No one is coming to save you. No one is going to give you permission. If you want more time, more money, more freedom, you have to go after it yourself. Let your faith be bigger than your fear.
Final Thoughts
The entrepreneurial journey is as much about personal growth as it is about business growth. Fears of failure and success are natural, but they don’t have to define your path.
By addressing these fears with intention and compassion, solopreneurs can unlock their full potential and create businesses that are not only successful but also deeply fulfilling.
Ready for an empowering journey of self-discovery, creativity, and independence? You can expect to encounter fear on this path, but don't let it stop you. There is magic waiting on the other side.
FEAR represents two choices: Forget Everything and Run. Or Face Everything and Rise. Which one will you choose?
